School penalizes students for hugs, high-fives Strict no-contact rule, meant to stem violence, has some pushing for change VIENNA, Va. - A rule against physical contact at a Fairfax County middle school is so strict that students can be sent to the principal's office for hugging, holding hands or even high-fiving. Unlike some schools in the Washington area, which ban fighting or inappropriate touching, Kilmer Middle School in Vienna bans all touching — and that has some parents lobbying for a change. Hugging was Hal Beaulieu's crime when he sat next to his girlfriend at lunch a few months ago and put his arm around her shoulder. He was given a warning, but told that repeat missteps could lead to detention. "I think hugging is a good thing," said Hal, a seventh-grader. "I put my arm around her. It was like for 15 seconds. I didn't think it would be a big deal." But at a school of 1,100 students that was meant to accommodate 850, school officials think some touching can turn into a big deal. They've seen pokes lead to fights, gang signs in the form of handshakes or girls who are uncomfortable being hugged but embarrassed to say anything. "You get into shades of gray," Kilmer Principal Deborah Hernandez said. "The kids say, 'If he can high-five, then I can do this.' " Hernandez said the no-touching rule is meant to ensure that all students are comfortable and crowded hallways and lunchrooms stay safe. She said school officials are allowed to use their judgment in enforcing the rule. Typically, only repeat offenders are reprimanded. 'Making out goes too far'But such a strict policy doesn't seem necessary to 13-year-old Hal and his parents, who have written a letter to the county school board asking for a review of the rule. Hugging is encouraged in their home, and their son has been taught to greet someone with a handshake. Mr Lim says the assignments are like, way overdue, so we gotta hand in asap, by next monday latest 18 june and he thinks next monday is too soon for the lecture, cos he wants to mark our work 1st. so he changed it to next saturday, 23rd june 9am LT2 so muggers! me miss A14 loads >.< and midyears are like, gonna be super screwed lah! ahem! we are long overdueeeeedddd on our dear Pip essay n the Prayer Before Birth poem analysis! >.<> now, i know we're all mugging for our midyears! (n trust me, boy are we RELI muggingg man haha ) but mr lim just sent me an e-mail, and it turns out that 17 outta 22 ppl havn't handed in ur stuff and (i quote) : It'll be a waste of time doing a feedback lecture with only half of my students having submitted. Can you let your classmates know I am waiting (impatiently now) for the assignments to come in. If there is no significant improvement (I am hoping for 75% at least), I will cancel next Monday's make up, and shift it to another date which I will inform you about. And I will let you people know latest by this Saturday 16th June. so to all you dearies out there! Next Monday's 18th June Lit remedial still stands for now. 9-10am. LT2. so i guess all those that hvn't handed in yet, PLEASE DO! just take it that our dear Pip is as cute and handsome as Brad Pitt or George Clooney or even (gasp!  hello hello! okay if the picture didn't catch ALL of you people's attention, im sure at least it caught cassandra's! yeah so since it'll be easier for singapore to win the world cup than to get the WHOLE class to get together for an outing. me figures why not set a date, say THIS SATURDAY, 9TH JUNE at some soon to be confirmed time so that we can watch mr pitt and friends!
